Gladiators were regular citizens of Rome, yet they had very different lives than we do today. Many gladiators were slaves, having no choice but to compete. Others, however, volunteered to be gladiators, wanting to win money or become popular among roman citizens. Most of the athletes in the first sport were from Roman Empire, yet some came from other areas. Gladiators were in high demand, so many had to fight frequently. Gladiators who won multiple battles were very rich and popular, being treated very well. Gladiators trained often, wanting to be more fit than their up-coming opponent.
